This is a first edition of Pinocchio published by Whitman Publishing out of Racine, Wisconsin in 1916. It is not in pristine condition but there is a reason for that (see below). The outside cover has some damage on the outer edges and has no dust cover. The inside is richly and abundantly illustrated by Alice Carsey. Some of the pages are loose but they are all there. There is evidence of some water damage on the pages but they can probably be cleaned up rebound in the original blue leather binding. The book itself measures 8-3/8" length x 6-1/4" width x 1-3/8" thick. A great find for any collector of vintage books. This book belonged to a man who was born and grew up in the Union Colony in Greeley, Colorado. That's right, the "Go west young man," colony of fame founded by Horace Greeley. Some of the damage may have come from the harsh conditions of living on the prairie of northeastern Colorado including a flood in Greeley. He lived to be 96 and was made of some of some pretty tough stuff.
